Ste Marie Madeleine de la Baume au St Pilon

Paul Smith

A Mid 19th-Century Bronze Pendant, copying the style of the painting by Gebhard Flatz, 1800–1881, of St Mary Magdalene (the painting is dated to 1876, located in the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Art in Vienna).

Inscribed as Ste Marie Madeleine de la Baume au St Pilon.

The Chapelle du St Pilon is part of the Grotte Ste Marie-Madeleine in St Baume.

Abbé Saunière based the decoration of his Church Altar on this. There is nothing unusual here and it is representative of basic Roman Catholic devotion.

Abbé Saunière’s original altar; taken from Jean-Pierre Deloux & Jacques Brétigny, Rennes-le-Château: Capitale secrète de l'Histoire de France (Spécial Inexpliqué, 12) (Paris: Editions Atlas, page 39; 1982)
