Long before Chris Bennett – various scholars have theorised about the origin of the Ten Commandments – the “The Burning Bush” – was due to the description of Moses on the Mountain – as given in the Book of Exodus – about how Moses resembled the effects of someone taking Marijuana. Thus also possibly explaining the features of the portable tent called the Tabernacle.
On the whole, Mainstream Scholarship wishes to protect Religion from the subject matter of drugs and religion, for it fears that the subject matter would then encroach upon Judaism & Christianity. For example, if it was ever admitted that drugs were involved in Ancient Egypt.
I once casually mentioned on an Internet Message Board that the Egyptian Goddess Seshat was associated with cannabis, because she is depicted with a hemp leaf in her headdress. Seshat was the Ancient Egyptian Goddess of Writing, Wisdom and Knowledge. It did not take long for someone to deny this (as it is not mentioned in the ultra-conservative Wikipedia), despite all the obvious evidence. It does not matter even if all the evidence fell on top of them, Mainstream Scholarship would automatically deny the relationship between drugs and religion.
