The village of Rennes-le-Château sealed the centenary of Bérenger Saunière’s death by naming the main street after him. This was followed by a commemorative communal meal for those who believed in the numerous conspiracy theories, organized by the Gazette de Rennes-le-Château website.

If only this commemoration marked historical facts and not conspiracy theories.

There is no connection between the Bérenger Saunière of historical fact and the Saunière of the conspiracy theories. Commemorating Saunière’s trafficking in masses, commemorating the stripping of Saunière’s priesthood, commemorating Marie Dénarnaud getting into over 31,000 francs of debt between 1917-1946. None of this has any spectacular appeal attached to it – and it is not addictive, requiring regular fixes…
