The Rumours of Procopius

The writings of Procopius (c500-565) are sometimes used to fuel possibilities that the Treasure of Jerusalem was taken by Alaric the Elder from Rome to Carcassonne (near Rennes-le-Château).

However, Procopius provides us with two rumours:

1. That the Holy Treasure of Jerusalem was taken to Carcassonne, whereby Clovis besieged the city without success.

2. Quote: “According to Procopius, Justinian became convinced that the temple treasures were cursed, bringing ruin to any city that housed them – Jerusalem, Rome, Carthage – and acceding to Jewish requests that they be returned, sent them away to the Christian churches in Jerusalem.”

Procopius provides us with contradictory statements about the Holy Treasure of Jerusalem!

Also, not all ancient writers agreed with Procopius.

From Chapter 38 of the Decline & Fall Of The Roman Empire In The West By Edward Gibbon

“After correcting the text or excusing the mistake of Procopius, who places the defeat of Alaric near Carcassonne, we may conclude, from the evidence of Gregory, Fortunatus, and the author of thc Gesta Francorum, that the battle was fought in campo Vocladensi, on the banks of the Clain, about ten miles to the south of Poitiers. Clovis overtook and attacked the Visigoths near Vivonne, and the victory was decided near a village still named Champagné St. Hilaire. See the Dissertations of the Abbé le Boeuf, tom. i. p. 304-331.”

Today's historians believe that the Menorah was melted down and its gold was used to pay for the Colosseum in Rome.

The Ark of the Covenant most probably perished in 586BC when the Babylonians captured Jerusalem.

We have got ample evidence of Abbé Bérenger Saunière trafficking in masses – but NOTHING – after 70 years of bombastic mythmaking – about any discovery of treasure.
