Two documents dated 2 October 1899 and 16 October 1899 relating to Saunière’s proposed promotion to the position of a personnat (from the Archives de l’Aude). The second reads thus:

“Monsieur Saunière is comfortably off. He has no family responsibilities. His conduct is good. He professes anti-government views. Attitude: militant reactionary. Negative recommendation.
