Alas, times were what they were, and the countryside is a prime example of this hardship. Bernard Sermon, our champion of the Occitan nobility and lord of Bezu, a supporter of the Cathar cause, reclaimed some of his lands and agricultural estates with the help of powerful knights. Three or four of them defended the fort, and they were soundly beaten. He remained there, but the Temple, protected by the Pope and the royal power, brought him to trial, which he inevitably lost. The course of history continued, and he found himself armed at Montségur. Almost everyone knows what happened next: to save his life, he had to go through the Inquisition in Carcassonne and confess to being a Cathar. He definitively lost Bezu, his castle, and his possessions to the invaders and his neighbors. Our hero, a champion of the Occitan and Cathar cause, faded into obscurity in a turbulent world.
