Rest In Peace
Josep Tarrés I Fontan
14 July 1929 – 19 April 2021

Josep Tarrés I Fontán was peddled as “the grandson of Abbé Bérenger Saunière”. It is not known whether he directly peddled this or not, but it was certainly claimed by other people that he was.

Josep Tarrés was known as a poet and was also interested in the esoteric and the paranormal.

In popular dictionaries he is described as: “A cultural activist, he pioneered the recovery of the historical heritage of the city of Girona... contributing to the discovery of the Jewish quarter of Girona. Tarrés was also one of the main organizers of the first edition of the floral exhibition, in 1954, together with Maria Cobarsí and Miquel Oliva, among others. In 1984 he was awarded the Civic Performance Award of the Carulla Foundation. He also chaired the Association of Historic Gardens and Natural Landscapes of Girona. On 4 May 2004, Girona City Council awarded him the distinction of Citizenship in recognition of his civic activities”.

Josep Tarrés was married to the sculptor Pia Crozet. There are no details about his parents. We need to have genealogical proof to put forward as a fact that Josep Tarrés was “the grandson of Abbé Bérenger Saunière” – or whether this was just another one of the thousands and thousands of fantasies of the Abbé Bérenger Saunière (Josep Tarrés could have been an orphan).
