Valéry Giscard d'Estaing was described as a Centre-Right, pro-Europe politician (that would have appealed to Plantard) – but d'Estaing also liberalised French laws on divorce, abortion and contraception (that Plantard, as a Traditionalist Roman Catholic, would have found disappointing)
