“I am of the Grand Occident...”

Le Grand Occident. – It was I believe in 1925; full of enthusiasm in the big philosophico-religious synthesis which I believed through the similar symbols of the ancient and the new world, I had made this evening a conference on ‘Atlantide’ in a literary and artistic circle of the district Montparnasse, entitled Le Caméleon. Doubtless these ideas could persuade that I belonged to freemasonry, because in the end, a decorated Sir came towards me and, holding out to me his hand, said to me mysteriously: “I am there also.” (I knew later that he was the Venerable Lodge of the Grand Orient.) A little taken aback, I had however the presence of mind to answer him: “I, I am not from there, I am from the Grand Occident!”

“Je suis du Grand Occident...”

Le grand Occident. – C'était je crois en 1925; plein d'enthousiasme pour la grande synthèse philosophico-religieuse que j'entrevoyais à travers les symboles semblables de l'ancien et du nouveau monde, j'avais fait ce soir-là une conférence sur l'Atlantide dans un cercle littéraire et artistique du quartier Montparnasse, intitulé Le Caméleon. Sans doute ces ides pouvaientelles faire croire que j'appartenais à la franc-maçonnerie, car à la fin, un monsieur décoré vint vers moi et, me tendant la main, me dit d'un ait mystérieux : « J'en suis aussi. » (Je sus plus tard qu'il était Vénérable d'une Loge au Grand Orient.) Un peu interloqué, j'eus cependant la présence d'esprit de lui répondre: « Moi, je n'en suis pas, je suis du Grand Occident ! »
