Bérenger Saunière & “Terribilis est locus iste”

Paul Smith

Terribilis est locus iste
This is a place of awe, usually mistranslated as This Place Is Terrible

These words, so beloved by Rennes-le-Château conspiracy theorists as proof of something unusual and strange – are in fact found above many entrances to Roman Catholic churches around the world. The inscription is not unique to the church of St Mary Magdalene in Rennes-le-Château.

Furthermore, Saunière placed this inscription to mark the re-dedication of his church following extensive re-decorations and renovations – and the words form the associated dedication ceremony: Entrance Antiphon for the (Roman Catholic) Common Dedication of a church.
