Peel Rig:
Marie Dénarnaud burnt money when French currency changed. That proves Bérenger Saunière was loaded with money when he died in 1917.

The Historian:
Nope, that’s a fantasy.

Peel Rig:
What ?

The Historian:
That was a Pierre Plantard and Philippe de Chérisey fantasy first mentioned in 1965 in the document “Les Descendants Mérovingiens ou l’énigme du Razès wisigoth” by Madeleine Blancassall

Peel Rig:
Wh-a-a-a-t …? It says so in The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail……

The Historian
Oh no, you have been conned and been the victim of unscrupulous chit-chat…

Peel Rig:
But it’s in The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, I tell you….

The Historian:
Look, that dollop of fantasy was put to rest in Captier & Corbu’s 1985 book L’Héritage de l’Abbé Saunière that reproduced Marie Dénarnaud’s financial documents of 1946…

Peel Rig:
Wh-a-a-a-t… ????

The Historian
Corbu & Captier showed that Marie Dénarnaud lived in extreme poverty until she met Noël Corbu who settled her enormous financial debts.

Peel Rig:
Marie Dénarnaud had… debts ??

The Historian:
You bet she did – she owed a total of 31.259 francs to several people….

Peel Rig:
Gulp…

The Historian:
The debts were settled by Noël Corbu.

Peel Rig:
So Marie Dénarnaud living in luxury - it’s all… fantasy….

The Historian:
While Corbu & Captier dismissed the fantasy that Marie Dénarnaud burnt French currency, they maintained that Marie did burn documents.

Peel Rig:
Relief ! There is something to believe in, after all…

The Historian:
Don’t count your chickens….

Peel Rig:
I’ll keep looking….keep hoping….
