IN THE SERVICE OF THE ALPHA

These are the events of 6 February that decided my present course of conduct.

I will never forget those tragic moments when, in a state of distress, I went in search of my very great friend Le Comte de Moncharville, on his return to Paris, to tell him of my despair at seeing all chances of achieving a revival of France evaporate.

In response this brilliant man simply replied: "My dear friend, this moment was ordained for you, because from now on you won’t be able to continue your efforts alone - your path is now the same as my path, so write on my behalf to my friend Georges Monti, a man of great ability."

So the next day I set to, and six months later I was member of the Alpha.

I admit that, initially, I was disappointed, because I had hoped to penetrate the secrets of the Order immediately, as my position suggested that I would be able to do, but it was only three years later that I was to learn the preliminary ideas behind this supremely powerful hermetic group.

From 1936 onwards, however, I was an Official Representative, and so from the very first day of the Spanish Civil War our watchword was to support nationalism and to join forces with Franco.

Then, in 1940, after being appointed Press Secretary of the Central Arch, I faithfully followed the line laid down by the Order, which was the Renewal of France and of Europe

Within the Alpha I have known men from all walks of life, some of them celebrities, like Jean Mermoz, Gabriel Trarieux d’Egmont etc., others who were people who will always remain unknown to the general public, such as Georges Monti and Le Comte de Moncharville, but I can state that all of them have possessed the same faith in the certainty of victory, and have faithfully adhered to all our doctrines, allowing solidarity to guide their conduct in all respects.

When, on 21 September 1942, Le Comte de Moncharville demitted his post his favour of Pierre de France, I was briefly concerned about the latter’s youth, but I knew Le Comte well enough to know that if he was entrusting the authority of the Order to this young unknown he was faithfully carrying out superior orders which, for us, had the force of sacred injunctions.

Our discipline has proved to be our source of strength as, over the past three months, all our hopes have been exceeded. Pierre de France has certainly shown himself to be worthy of our confidence; indeed, it is about our reasons for placing our belief and hope in him that I shall be speaking next 27 December.

Now let me draw some conclusions from my eight years in the service of the Alpha:

1° I have observed that the newcomers among us remain in the Order for several years without having any inkling at all of any driving force behind our Order;

2° I have concluded that the law of solidarity really has been respected by all our members, and that all of them have voluntarily submitted to total obedience to their competent superiors;

I have learned also that the secrets of what has passed between us have never once been allowed to go beyond our ranks: even the most diligent enquiries into our activities have always drawn a complete blank.

Which member of any society at the present time can boast without fear of contradiction that his society possesses an equivalent organisational strength, unity of outlook and certainty of ultimate victory?

None, except a member of the Alpha.
